Take a look at fares into Milan or Rome, since they are often much lower when flying on short notice or without a Saturday-night stay. If you’re flying from the West Coast, connect in New York. Take San Francisco–Milan for example: Non-stop it costs $7,110 on short notice. But fly SF–New York (about $1,200 Biz Class), then NY–Milan ($3,300) and you save $2,500+.
