Air New Zealand Premium Economy: The airline recently upgraded its service to offer this entirely new cabin, which has seats 18.5 inches wide and 38-40 inches of pitch (standard pitch is 34 inches). Until March 31, 2007, it’s offering these seats online at very good prices (only blackout dates are Dec. 7-28) from Los Angeles and San Francisco to Auckland, Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, and Cairns. Qantas Business Class: While Qantas doesn’t offer a Premium Economy product, it must be feeling pressure from both Air New Zealand’s new, better Business Class seats, and United’s fares (US-Sydney fares are up to 40% less). It has put its Business Class seats on sale through June 19. (It’s out of character for Qantas to discount US premium fares.) Round-trip fares to Sydney start at $7,998 (reg. $10,463) for travel through Aug. 31, and are only valid on Qantas flights 73 and 74, the San Francisco-Sydney nonstop that departs Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday.
