Continental launches extraordinary fares a month earlier than last year. Other airlines are slow to match. Round trip Business Class starts at $1,100 from the east coast and $1,600 from the west coast.
Continental launched cut-rate holiday fares a bit early this year—but they’re as good as ever. Surprisingly, though, no other airlines are matching at this point, although I expect that to change before long, perhaps even as you read this issue. I gave you a heads-up about these fares back in July. (I plan to book at least one flight myself!)
The fares, seasons, and rules…
They’re starting at $1,100 for Thanksgiving travel, Nov. 18 to 30, and $1,400 for Christmas travel Dec. 16 through Jan. 11. A 30-day advance purchase is required.
The best seats
When you start planning, remember the seat discrepancies we’ve covered recently (Continental in Feb’s
) because there’s nothing better than a low fare for the best seats available.
Elite credit
If you must fly to keep up your elite status, a situation commonly referred to as a Mileage Run, this is the time to do it, especially when you can do it in comfort. On a per-mile basis, these are some of the lowest fares you’ll find. Plus, Business Class with most carriers can yield 150% elite and mileage credit.
More coming
Last year, American, Northwest and US Airways matched Continental’s fares and even BA on some routes—so let’s hope it’s just a matter of time before they decide not to be left out. And if history is any indication, I also suspect we’ll soon find deeply discounted holiday fares offered to Asia and Australia. This charge is usually led by Northwest, and with its financial woes and labor troubles, it may offer some of the lowest premium fares yet!
Updates coming soon.
