Premium Economy Upgrades Now Available at the Gate

I recently found a United web page that states, “Did you know that you can upgrade to Economy Plus seating for a nominal fee at check-in? You may select this option, if available, when you check in online or at the airport.” I didn’t know this, and I found it interesting that there was no mention of cost.

Sources at United say that’s because the upgrade fee is based on miles flown. Example: New York-Los Angeles-New York, at 2,459 flight miles, costs $59 one-way. Not bad it you need the legroom and didn’t get an elite upgrade, a common occurrence on a heavily trafficked route like this. Keep in mind that you can also get access to Premium Economy for you and a companion for a year for only $349 through United’s Economy Plus Access program. It can be cheaper in the long run than paying as you go.
