Hi Carol.....I live here in the gulf and travel a lot to Dubai. If it's one trip, try and book a flight where business or first class have available seats and then just simply ask to be upgraded from the check in counter and they will leave a message at the gate. Tell them yoiu are not feeling well and they might even take permission from the pilot while you are on board and up in the air. Emirates is good about it but I have to tell you, Etihad is a little more leniant. Make sure you get the miles from this flight because it's a lot and ask if they are having any special offers such as double miles etc at the counter upon check in. If you are planning any more trips to the area then I suggest for you to buy a one way ticket to the gulf and then purchase a round trip ticket from a travel agent over here. For some reason buying a round trip ticket from Dubai-jfk-dubai is half the price than jfk-dubai-jfk. I know americans who actually do this when they are coming back. Trust me it's true because I fly 1st always back and forth and it's double the price when I buy my mother a round trip ticket to fly over from usa to dubai for a visit. Hope this helps and good luck on your trip....Dubai is a nice place. Kelly
